The Life of a Roaming Nurse Across Borders

Pot Holes, Patience, and Peak Views: My Mount Ellinor Adventure

Dear “Why Didn’t I Get a Lift Kit for the Van?”

Let me tell you about the time I thought it would be a great idea to drive up to the Upper Mount Ellinor trailhead by Lake Cushman. Spoiler: It was incredible. But, as with any good adventure, it came with a few minor bumps along the way. By bumps, I mean massive potholes that looked like they could swallow my entire van.

The drive starts innocently enough—just your regular forest service road. But then, around mile one, it’s like the road decided, “Let’s make this interesting.” And interesting it was! The first two miles? Honestly, nearly impassable. I’m talking potholes the size of small craters, requiring some serious slow-motion maneuvering. If you don’t have clearance, do not take this road. I mean it. I did it in my standard clearance Ford Transit, but I went slower than a turtle in molasses. I seriously cannot warn people enough about this. But hey, if I can do it, so can you—with patience!

Once you get past those first two miles, the road turns into your typical forest service situation. Still bumpy, but passable. And that’s when you start to notice the views. Oh. My. God. The views of Mount Ellinor are absolutely breathtaking. I found a few pull-off spots where I could park the van, and just be for a while, soaking it all in. Stella was equally impressed, I’m sure—though her tail wagging could’ve been because I let her run around for a bit.

Surprisingly, I had cell service up there too. It was one of those perfect spots where you feel miles away from the world but can still send a quick pic to your friends so they know you haven’t been eaten by a bear.

At the very top of the road, you’ll find a large parking lot with a bathroom (luxury!) and more of those incredible views, as well as the Upper Mount Ellinor trailhead. I snapped a few pictures, but honestly, pictures don’t do this place justice. I mean, just look at this (insert picture here). It’s like stepping into another world.

All in all, despite the bumpy start, this was one of those trips that reminds me why I love van life, potholes and all. If you’re willing to take it slow, navigate a few craters, and enjoy the ride, Mount Ellinor is absolutely worth the trip. Just don’t forget your patience and maybe bring a snack for the road… because it’s going to take you a while.

Until next time,
Your Pothole-Dodging, View-Chasing Nomadic Nurse
